** well, the founder of a startup i've been providing trainings for seems to have given in to the hype and is off playing with someone else's chatbot instead of iterating on our features today 😅. meanwhile, i get the opportunity to dig through the [[https://cdn.openai.com/papers/gpt-4-system-card.pdf][new]][[https://cdn.openai.com/papers/gpt-4.pdf][PDFs]] and puzzle out what the team over at OpenAI has accomplished, how they talk about what they did, and how it fits into my existing conceptions of what AI progress is likely to look like over the next 5 years.
*Successful prediction: *the performance improvements on certain tasks according to their empirical model. it's pretty cheeky that one test of their AI is by evaluating it on the code that defines the AI, and seeing how surprised it is about its own code. they are starting to hypothesize that* power laws *(which arise quite often in natural science) characterize the contexts where machine learning models can succeed. These predictions of how their new AIs will perform are called *scaling hypotheses *and still defy scientific understanding of their cause.

**
** *Weird vibes: *Sam Altman, founder of OpenAI, published a [[https://openai.com/blog/planning-for-agi-and-beyond][heads-in-the-clouds blog post]] about "planning for AGI." Attempting to provide thought leadership for the less-open language-AI initiatives like PaLM (Alphabet) or Wu Dao (BAAI) and stimulate peaceful cooperation- maybe to convince his own AI that he's the good guy? The mind can go wild with all the different ways to look at the situation.
I could go into a lot of depth on some of the meaty computer science questions posed by the new work, but at the end of the day we are left with (indirect) access to this fascinating linguistic artifact and open questions like *How do we use this? *and* What can it even do? *and* Is this system safe, or is it going to turn the entire planet into paperclips before Q3? *Personally, I am fairly worried about how businesses will respond to GPT-4. If progress stopped today, the globe would still have several years of experimentation and adaptation to do to cope with the new capabilities that we have summoned. From my systems modeling and analysis perspective, collectively we are unwise and have overly-slow governance loops that already struggled to keep up with the pace of technological advancement. Will GPT-4 powered scams make previous crypto scam cycles look like a calm exercise in financial regulation? How might this technology be exploited by people with harmful intent, or careless profit-seekers?
** *My takeaway. *It's a cool bot API, and we've got a lot of discussion to do with each other* *to* *figure out how to* safely guardrail these systems *to produce a* net benefit for us all. *It's hard to trust OpenAI's Trust&Safety team with the early exploration in this realm, and even harder to trust that other parties will be as responsible as OpenAI have demonstrated themselves to be. This fire cannot be unlit.
